Personal Response 5:Earthquakes

Hi Everyone,

1.The earliest reported earthquake in California was felt in 1769 by the exploring expedition of Gaspar de Portola while the group was camping about 48 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of Los Angeles.

2.Before electronics allowed recordings of large earthquakes, scientists built large spring-pendulum seismometers in an attempt to record the long-period motion produced by such quakes. The largest one weighed about 15 tons. There is a medium-sized one three stories high in Mexico City that is still in operation.

3.The average rate of motion across the San Andreas Fault Zone during the past 3 million years is 56 mm/yr (2 in/yr). This is about the same rate at which your fingernails grow. Assuming this rate continues, scientists project that Los Angeles and San Francisco will be adjacent to one another in approximately 15 million years.

4.The East African Rift System is a 50-60 km (31-37 miles) wide zone of active volcanics and faulting that extends north-south in eastern Africa for more than 3000 km (1864 miles) from Ethiopia in the north to Zambezi in the south. It is a rare example of an active continental rift zone, where a continental plate is attempting to split into two plates which are moving away from one another.

personal response 4:Child safety belt in school buses

Hi everyone,
For week 8, the personal response topic is on the need for school children to wear safety belt when travelling in school buses.
First, you have to read the article in this link:
http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/news/story/0,4136,163170,00.html
After you have read the article, you are required to respond to the message.
To help you write your personal response, I have listed some questions below :

1. Do you take the school bus to school?

2. How do the children behave in the school bus?

3. Do you agree with Ms Karen Koh that safety belt should be install in school buses?
Why?

4. Do you agree with Mr Leow Beng Kiong's view that installing seat belts are not only costly but also unnecessary as the children are on the bus for only about 15 minutes? Why?

5. What can children, bus attendants and school do to make sure that children are safe when travelling in school bus?

~~~
MY RESPONCE
1.i never take the school bus to school
2. i am not so sure how the children in our schools school buses behaves ,but all I know is that the children in other school buses are far to wild!!!
3. I agree with Mrs.Karen Koh that safety beits should be installed,because if there were any seat belts before the eight-year-old boy was recently killed in the mini-bus accident with two cars the boy would not have died and just suffered some major cuts and injuries.
4. i do not agree with Mr Leow Beng Kiong's view that installing seat belts are not only costly but also unnecessary as the children are on the bus for only about 15 minutes,because our lives are more important than money and because during the journey to school an accident can occur at any time.
5. they could make sure if anybody wears his or hers seat belt but that is if the bus has seat belt otherwise they should chech if anybody is standing when the bus is moving.
reflection 2 : my dream
c) How do you plan to realise your dream?
d) Do you think people should have dreams? Why?
~~~
reflection

My dream is to become a doctor like my father, so that I can help others. I feel that if I become a doctor, I will be able to treat myself if I have any injuries too. Becoming a doctor is very hard because I will have to do well in all subjects. My plan to realise my dream is by studying very hard. People should have dreams so that they will aim to succeed in life. We will not be able to have a goal in life if we do not have dreams
.

responses

a) 'Racial harmony' means that people from other races unit and become friends instead of being enemys.
b) Misunderstandings can arise when different people speak different languages .that is why we learn different languages.
c) I think that Rajah's solution is good and we should try our best to forget what race we are from,he also missed out another solution. that is about our language ,if we do not speak the same language misunderstanding will arise.so we must speak the same language so that we will not misunderstand each other .
d) We can encourage people of different races to be friends by being friendly with them and by trying to know them better.
e) Our school should teach us more languages like Japanese and Korean language on Racial Harmony Day.

I look forward to reading your posts.

Maybe my father was bluffing because he just wanted me to do well ! I really hope not. I really hope that Javier can do better in his studies too ! And I hope all of you will have a jolly good Term 2 , Bye Bye!

Entry 6: my ideal sports carnival

I did not go to my school's Sports Carnival so I will write to you about my ideal sports carnival.Well I want my ideal sports carnival to have three hours of break (tee hee)and there would be high-class food from very expensive restaurants ,and there would be a roller-blading race and if some people did not know how to roller-blade, there would also be experts to teach them how to roller-blade ,and then we would go back home. How I wish it could happen!

Entry 5: Goodbye, Mr.Singh!

On wednesday 28 of February, Mrs.Tan told the whole class that Mr.Singh our vice principal was promoted to be a principal of another school on the 5th of march ! We were all suprised and sad at the same time because he was with us for 1 year and 2 months. When I heard this I was happy for him because he was like a principal who took lots of care for the school I hope that the next principal will be just like him and that it won't be a women because women are more fierce.

Entry 4: chinese new year celebrations

On 06/02/08 Wednesday,it was a half-day at our school as it was Chinese New Year Eve.Of course, as everybody should know, our principal would normally encourage us to wear chinese costumes. So I decided to wear my chiong sum, a Chinese dress normally decorated with
flowers and dragons.
When I first reached the hall, I knew that we were going to watch some Chinese video clips and there were going to be Chinese dancers dancing on the stage while some of the teachers would be acting and some more! And I was sure that was all that they would be showing us but I did not know there was going to be a lion dance performance as well. Soon we had to go to the classroom to do our work. What a busy day it was!

Entry 3: pet

I have a hamster called Princess. She is very cute but fierce and she likes bitting people! Once she bit my friend Samantha on the finger and her finger bled. When I heard about it, I scolded ," Naughty Princess !"( but of course she could not understand).

Princess also likes to shed tissue papers and make them into her soft and comfy bed. Princess is by nature very clean. She likes to pee in the same corner all the time. We always give Princess a small paper box. She keeps scratching it and she will pull the shedded tissue into the small box. When she does that, it looks like she's moving house. Princess is also very greedy. She likes to store food in her cheek pouches then she brings the food to the box and empties the food from her cheek pouches.

Princess likes to excercise too. She excercises by running on a wheel and scratching on a disgarded toilet roll. Sometimes, my mother and I would put her in a plastic ball and bring her to the lobby so that she would be able to run around freely without us trying to catch her.

One day, my mother's friend came with two adorable puppies which she wanted to sell. When Princess came out of her box, she got a shock of her life. She immediately ran back into her box and never came out again until the dogs went home.

One morning, we couldn't find her. We thought she escaped but she did not. She was actually under her wheel which fell over her. She tried her best to get out of it but all she could do was to go through the floor which was a grill. Her body went through the grill but her big head got stuck! My parents used a plier to cut away the grill so that she would not suffocate. After this incident, we decided to put her in another cage.

I find that having a hamster is a bit troublesome but I'm still glad to have a funny little hamster like Princess!

Entry 2: My December holidays

Taken from my computer

During my December holidays, I went to Hong Kong Disneyland with my friend Laura and her family. My Grandmother and her grandparents tagged along too. We stayed there for five days at Disneyland Hotel.

In Disneyland, I enjoyed many rides like the Autopier and Astroblast in Tomorrowland. The most enjoyable ride was Space mountain, a rollercoaster ride. I liked it so much that I went on it four times with my friends without any parent supervision.

We also explored other parts of Hong Kong like Mongkok where we visited the Ladies Market and Maritime Square in Tsing Yi where we ate very delicious dim sum (even better than Singapore's). At Causeway Bay I met up with Samantha, my primary one and two classmate. She is a Hong Kong citizen and she goes back to Hong Kong every school holiday.

Besides Disneyland, we also went to another Theme Park called Ocean Park. I feel that Ocean Park is better than Disneyland because of the fantastic rides and games there. My most favourite rides are the Viking , the Eagle and the Merry-Go-Round Swing (actually I don't really know the accurate name for the Merry-Go-Round Swing).

I really miss Hong Kong !

Entry 1: blog netiquette

Blog netiquette is about being polite when you are posting emails to others like your friends and family or even to the public. Typing out slang language is not acceptable while posting or emailing.

Netiquette is simply manners for internet use - the proper way to behave when you're communicating on the computer. Written communication does not convey the same expression as face-to-face communication, so we must have some standardized conventions for politeness. In the workplace, the rapport we have with others is important. The tone of a message will build it or destroy it. We must use netiquette to build/maintain rapport.
Netiquette instruction should begin with education. Students are being taught courtesy on the Internet that they can understand - showing respect to be respected.
